Austin Backstage Live is a proposed 250 acre entertainment venue which would be located in Southeast Austin, south of William Cannon Drive and north of Slaughter Lane between I-35 and Bluff Springs Road. One key element of this project is its goal to be a zero waste facility. In keeping with Austin’s goals for being the leader in “green cities” the proposed project plans for developing this venue as a 100% green development. These are ambitious goals but are also goals that can demonstrate that with forethought and planning, developers can retain a large portion of the ecological environment within their project plans. Austin Backstage Live will be partnering with Texas Disposal Systems Green Event Services to design and manage the environmental aspects of the project. With a proven track record in Austin, the primary focus for TDS will be to maintain a zero waste facility through recycling and composting, with a goal to recycle 80-90% of the waste from the various facilities and venues throughout the development. TDS Green Event Services has years of experience and many national and local awards to its credit. The Austin City Limits Music Festival and The Austin Wine and Music Festival are two events where eco-friendly practices have been recognized. The proposal for this development is to make Austin Backstage Live a unique and attainable model for green development through sound environmental education and waste management practices. Austin Backstage Live will be home to many different outdoor events, plus hotels, condos, restaurants, an international farmers market and other park activities that will happen on site. It will be interesting to follow the efforts and programs that are to be implemented during all stages of this project. The partnership between Austin Backstage Live and TDS Green Event Services to develop and sustain a zero waste facility can only be an added attraction for visitors to what will become a choice destination venue in Austin.
